GOOPS - HOW TO START A GARDEN AT HOME - DUPES

Obviously that's not me with my trug!
I was perusing Gwyneth Paltrows website Goop,
If you haven't come across it before, it is an on-line shopping catalogue disguised as a magazine where only the most perfect of fantasy lives feature.
Gritty and real, it is not,
aspirational? to an absurd degree! But that's not knocking them for it, that is there USP and they are the absolute masters at it.
One of their latest articles was
A short extract, (published during lockdown)...
Is there a possibility that you’re feeling a little too productive? Perhaps you’ve run out of drawers to organize (this just happened to Elise). Or you’re no longer feeling distracted by your grown-out roots (we’ve got products and tips for that). Now’s the time to consider something a little more passive: gardening....

I make no comment.

As a nation in lockdown who have as one, become obsessed with our gardens, yards, window boxes, plant pots, and as this blog is about lifestyle but on the erm smaller budget, I thought I'd heed their advice and then find a small budget alternative.

01
ADD INSTANT COLOUR WITH BLOOMS

They recommend this fuchsia orchid,
it is absolutely beautiful, delivered to your door for $115.
Alternatively you can pick one up in Asda for £10.
Here's mine, not quite as attractive at the moment as I nearly killed it, over watered and not enough light, but it's reviving and will be back to it's former beauty soon.

The plant pot the money tree cutting is in, I found for 50p in a junk shop,
I've just seen they are £30 each and I got two, £1 instead of £60 bargain.

What it actually looks like with a proper photographer, here if you fancy one at the full price.

02
DON'T FORGET TO WATER YOUR PLANTS

That is with out a doubt a beautiful watering can, possibly the most beautiful, $180 from Skultuna.

This lovely one is a tad cheaper at £19 in polished steel.

And the Goop recommended mister

$30 from Haws.

The same Haws mister is available here on Amazon for £15,
about £10 less?

03
UPGRADE YOUR INDOOR HERB GARDEN
Brace yourself for this one
State of the art herb planter, complete with it's own watering system and app!!
$799 yes, $799 from Sprouts10
It's apparently used in the NoMad kitchen, I strongly suspect if that is the case, it's because the company gave them it.

Here's a less complicated kit with all you need and featuring the Goop essentials, organic, recycled.

But just £17

04
START COUNTER TOP COMPOSTING
Actually at the risk of sounding completely boring, that's a good looking compost bucket $44 from Bamboozle.
Far more attractive than the plastic box I use.
This is the cheapest look a like I could find, still in the eco friendly bamboo £20

05
INVEST IN A GOOD PAIR OF SCISSORS
They recommend these artisan pruning shears $26 from Bare Bones Living
But the classic British garden tool company Kent & Stowe have these equally handsome ones as part of a nice kit for £15.

Or obviously, there's always the old faithful Poundland for a pair for £1.

06
GROW A VEGETABLE GARDEN FROM SCRATCH

Potting shed creations $55.
$55 for 6 small bags containing a bit of compost and seeds but stylishly packaged, hence $55

A lot cheaper, and I quite fancy this one £15

You would never know what was arriving, purple carrots, striped tomatoes from the plant theatre!
Here if you want one too.

07
TRANSFER YOUR SHOOTS INTO SOMETHING MORE SPACIOUS
The large of these pots 20cm! Is $102 from Farm House Pottery.
Or this similarly sized beauty £25 from Ivyline.

08
THE TOOL KIT
They recommend lot's of things from Barebones living, for all your stylish wannabe forager needs.

$38 but I can see what attracts them to this Barebones stuff, I want it all too but it's just a US company.
So, these classic English carbon steel, ash handled also beloved of hipsters classic style pair from Draper are just £15 for the two, should last a lifetime!
09
WHAT TO WEAR WHILE WEEDING

Linum HEDVIG APRON
Apron from Linum $83

Love a hipster apron, here's a slightly cheaper £13 black denim one.

Lot's of pockets!

10
GET INSPIRED

Hachette IT'S ALL EASY, AUTOGRAPHED VERSION

Gwyneths book signed $45

Or unsigned here for £17

Not affiliate links, just bargains.

    1. Good luck with it, I'm going to attempt to make a wooden planter this week for a grapevine, the world has gone gardening mad :)

  2. I love that you've included budget versions of everything here, leaving more money to spend on plants and seeds ;) I am definitely a fair-weather only gardener, but I'm loving my herbs and peonies at the moment.
